Title: The First Conspiracy Pdf The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington
Taking place during the most critical period of our nation’s birth, The First Conspiracy tells a remarkable and previously untold piece of American history that not only reveals George Washington’s character, but also illuminates the origins of America’s counterintelligence movement that led to the modern day CIA.
In 1776, an elite group of soldiers were handpicked to serve as George Washington’s bodyguards. Washington trusted them; relied on them. But unbeknownst to Washington, some of them were part of a treasonous plan. In the months leading up to the Revolutionary War, these traitorous soldiers, along with the Governor of New York, William Tryon, and Mayor David Mathews, launched a deadly plot against the most important member of the military: George Washington himself.
This is the story of the secret plot and how it was revealed. It is a story of leaders, liars, counterfeiters, and jailhouse confessors. It also shows just how hard the battle was for George Washington and how close America was to losing the Revolutionary War.
In this historical page-turner, New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer teams up with American history writer and documentary television producer, Josh Mensch to unravel the shocking true story behind what has previously been a footnote in the pages of history. Drawing on extensive research, Meltzer and Mensch capture in riveting detail how George Washington not only defeated the most powerful military force in the world, but also uncovered the secret plot against him in the tumultuous days leading up to July 4, 1776.
Praise for The First Conspiracy:

Anyone with an interest in American history will love this book." —Douglas Preston, #1 bestselling author of The Lost City of the Monkey God
“A wonderful book about leadership?and it shows why George Washington and his moral lessons are just as vital today. What a book. You’ll love it.” —President George H.W. Bush
“This is an important book: a fascinating largely unknown chapter of our hazardous beginning, a reminder of why counterintelligence matters, and a great read.” —President Bill Clinton
History presented as a thriller I received an Advance Reading Copy of The First Conspiracy by Brad Meltzer and John Mensch from the publisher (Flatiron Books) in exchange for an honest review. The First Conspiracy is scheduled for release on January 8, 2019.The First Conspiracy is not a novel, it is a glimpse into a piece of history. We are dropped into the months leading up to the Declaration of Independence and the war that it launches. The focus of this history is a group of men who are secretly associated with the British. This group of men has a plan. They are out to get George Washington. This story is told in third person, which makes sense for a history. The story jumps around in both place and time, following different people and their actions. Given that we are piecing together a conspiracy, the jumping made sense. What made less sense to me was the tense Meltzer chose to write in. This history is written in present tense. I think his goal was to make us feel a sense of urgency, make us feel tension and anxiety over how things were going to turn out. This did not work for me. Since this is a history, I knew from the beginning that the attempt to assassinate Washington was going to be unsuccessful. The choice of present tense just felt awkward. The down side to the jumping in time and space was that we never get a chance to really attach to any of the characters. While we see what individuals are doing, we don’t get close to any of them. This made it difficult for me to sink into the story. I felt very distant from the action and the people involved.I also struggled with the writing style Meltzer used. Meltzer is a bestselling author, who typically writes thrillers. I could see this in his approach to this history. His chapter lead ins and endings had the feel of what I see in thrillers. Again, this felt out of place to me. It felt as if he were trying to force a sense of excitement into the story, rather than mining and developing the intrigue that was inherent to this conspiracy tale. While this was an interesting story about a piece of history that I honestly did not know about, I did not love this book. I wanted to be immersed in this conspiracy, immersed in the plotting and intrigue. Instead, I was overly aware of the author and his stylistic devices.A Fascinating Bit of History The fledgling country had so much going against it as it struggled for independence from the militarily superior British. And the country is divided, the loyalists or Tories on one side and the revolutionaries on the other. It is a wonder it all didn’t go awry for George Washington’s Continental Army as they had to deal with shortages of every kind, and then there were the plots. Not only from without, but also from within their own ranks. Perhaps the most sinister one of all, was the plot to kill General Washington himself. The authors have done exhaustive research on the subject so much of the book is based on what they were able to uncover. The rest is speculation or educated guesses, a filling in of the blanks if you will, and they let you know when they do. A fascinating story, I thought it was a little repetitive at times, but overall a very satisfying read. I learned some things I didn’t know before, like how much importance Washington placed on honor and integrity. It was written in such a way as to make it all very intriguing. If you like history, then I think you’ll like this one.Outstanding Reads like a novel with familiar characters. New insights into time we should all know more about.Gives great insight into GW’s character. A fine book
